Drugs of abuse include a variety of agents, from marijuana to methamphetamine and other stimulants, hallucinogens, opioids, and synthetic opioids. Use of these agents is increasing and patterns of abuse, including combinations of agents in younger patients, often complicate both acute and long-term treatment. In this presentation, the most commonly abused “street drugs” will be discussed. Demographics and risks of use will be described, and evidence-based strategies for acute management of overdose and substance use disorder will be considered.
