Liver failure presents in many different capacities, and it is essential for nurse practitioners to understand the complexities of the diagnostic and treatment processes. This presentation will help nurse practitioners gain a deeper understanding of liver failure, including medications, infections, and metabolic changes that can cause injury, in order to offer the highest level of care. Nurse practitioners must be familiar with the various drugs that can be associated with acute liver injury (e.g., amoxicillin-clavulanate, acetaminophen, valproic acid) and their potential impacts. The complications of liver failure, including hepatic encephalopathy and cerebral edema, will also be covered. The improved treatment strategies presented in this presentation will assist nurse practitioners in managing liver failure in the future.
