From AKI to RRT: Nephrology Update 2019
Michelle K Shields, MSN, ACNP-BC
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, requiring nurse practitioners (NPs) to have skill in prompt recognition, treatment, and the need for urgent referral, as needed. Through a case study approach, this session will provide the latest advances in patient management, including breaking news that can be directly integrated into clinical practice.
Providing a clinical framework, this presentation will include a brief overview of AKI, risk factors, and staging severity, along with potential short- and long-term outcomes. Updates in acute management of AKI, including more challenging cases such as those that involve cardiorenal, hepatorenal and cancer treatment will be addressed. A discussion of renal replacement therapies and other strategies such as renal dosing will also be included to heighten the NP’s knowledge of available therapies.
