Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an important and potentially life-saving advanced support device for patients with severe cardiogenic shock and/or respiratory failure. Clinicians who care for critically ill patients should be aware of the indications for ECMO, as well as the general management principles, potential complications, and outcomes of this intervention. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the two main modes of ECMO, veno-arterial (VA) and veno-venous (VV) ECMO, while also focusing on high-yield evidence and best practices that serve to inform effective patient selection and bedside care.
