Oncologic emergencies can develop at any time during a patient’s disease trajectory but are more commonly encountered during the initial presentation or during end-of-life care. This session highlights the expectations in managing these emergencies by strengthening their physical assessment skills to recognize subtle signs and symptoms that the patient may exhibit. Participants will learn to interpret pertinent assessment data (e.g., concerning vital signs, key laboratory findings and trends, and other important diagnostic test results) that support the diagnosis. This presentation focuses on honing the skills of ordering and implementing lifesaving, evidence-based interventions in a timely manner, as well as evaluating patient criteria that suggest the successful resolution of these oncologic emergencies to ensure patient safety.
